Last day in Rio... nooooooooooooo!!!!!
Today began with another vermilion sunrise glowing over the jade-green Atlantic. I and John Ziegler, our Director of Client Services, took advantage of the cooler morning temperatures to go for a run on Copacabana's white, sandy beach. It's startling to see so many people already at the beach at such an early hour, but with perfect weather and the Brazilians' love of sun, sand, and surf, these people don't waste any time!
The great thing about the beach is that you can spend an entire day there without depriving yourself.... While lazing in your rented lounge chair, shaded from the sun under your rented umbrella, you can sip iced coconut milk with a straw from a freshly opened coconut; munch on barbecued prawn kebabs hawked by vendors carrying mini-hibachi grills; and enjoy an array of silky ice creams made fresh each morning and temptingly proffered by friendly Carioca kids.
We enjoyed a final amazing breakfast al fresco on our stupendous rooftop terrace, all the while gawking down at the sundry volleyball players, surfers, and roller bladers doing their thing...
Dinner early tonight... we feasted at Porcão, a Rio institution which lavishes upon its guests a mind-boggling array of the most toothsome grilled meats imaginable. (My favorite: the sirloin roasted with parmesan... YUMMMMM!) The meats are carved tableside and served until you say "when." The frosty caipirinhas are tangy (and strong); the side dishes (particularly the sautéed bananas and the crispy onion rings) are superb; the desserts are an exercise in pure, unbridled evil (particularly the unctuous lime tartlets and the brownie sundaes with caramel ice cream); and the bill is surprisingly reasonable. Sheer bliss.
