Venice is one of the world's most romantic cities. With its labyrinth of over 100 canals, 400 picturesque bridges and a formidable collection of fine art, Venice seduces visitors from the moment they arrive. This is the first stop on our Italy Cities tour, and we're covering much of Venice on foot. Without any cars, Venice feels like a Renaissance village. From our hotel near St. Mark's Square, we ventured out with our "Mary" band of guests to discover the true essence of Venice. Venice is art. The Galleria dell'Academia houses priceless treasures from the 15th and 16th centuries; Murano Island (home of stunning murano glass) boasts what must be the most impressive collection of glass masterpieces anywhere; and the Ca' d'Oro and numerous other palazzi, churches and gorgeous squares are all found here. Apart from walking, the obvious other great way to see Venice is by water. Local water taxis and buses ferry visitors and residents throughout the 118 islands which comprise the city, and of course a private gondola ride at sunset through the quiet, ancient canals is a must.
