Rome, Italy

Rome created what was arguably the greatest empire of all time.  Spanning nearly a milennium, more than any other civilization it influenced the western world. One sees the evidence of this today in religion, politics, architecture, science and art, among many other areas.

Supposedly, all roads lead to Rome, and our Italy Cities tour has led us into the heart of the Eternal City.  Why is it called eternal?  Because even now there exist thoughout the city numerous buildings dating back roughly two thousand years which are still standing.  Among the most impressive are the Colosseum, the Pantheon and the Caracalla's Baths.

Of course, no visit here would be complete without a visit to the Vatican. The Holy See boasts one of the largest, most impressive art collections anywhere.  Works by Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian all appear in the Vatican collection. And the Sisitine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica defy descripton.

Another of Rome's great attractions is its food, foremost of which figures the addictive Italian ice cream called gelato.  Our group is determined to research as many gelaterie as possible (strictly as a matter of scientific record) in pursuit of not only the best flavors, but also the best flavor combinations, textures, colors, display and just about another other benchmark we've been able to think up.  Fortunately, our days have been full from walking all over the city and not one of us has gained a pound!  (So we can rationalize our excessive gelato consumption as much-needed fuel.)
