Today, my friend Dean Frick and I arrived in Madagascar, first stop on a three week scouting tour of the Indian Ocean.
The capital of Antananarivo is constructed on a series of steep hills. The city is green and has a number of monuments. Oddly, rice paddies being tilled by oxen are visible even on the short ride in from the airport.
We're staying at the Hotel Colbert, a colonial holdover which today is the best place in town (not that the competition is particularly fierce). The food is French and excellent... I had a ginger-lime souffle that would have impressed Julia Child. The rooms are surprisingly comfortable. The city itself offers little for tourists. However, the central market is a fun diversion, with lots of unusual items for sale. Negotiation is expected. I bought two pounds of vanilla beans, and my suitcase now smells like it will probably be vanilla-scented forever.
