Ankarana National Park, Madagascar

Ankarana is probably Madagascar's most interesting national park. Its attractions include abundant wildlife (among which figure significant colonies of different species of lemur), a unique cave system and the bizarre limestone formations called tsingy. The latter resemble acres of grey knives... the tips, pointing strqight up, are incredibly sharp.

Many of the lemurs have perfect night vision but are essentially blind during the day. These primates are fun to watch as they sit in the trees. They stare down in one's general direction, and while they use their hearing to locate you (more or less), they clearly can't see you. Dean and I enjoyed observing them as they peered myopically with their oversized, concerned eyes.

We're staying at a simple but comfortable campsite located just across the road from the park's main entrance. For a couple of dollars, awoman prepared delicious roasted chicken with sticky rice and steamed vegetables, followed by fried bananas with cinnamon.
