Dean and I arrived by motorboat yesterday at Nosy Komba, a small island off Madagascar's northwest coast.
Our hotel, Tsara Komba, is a tiny gem run by two Frenchmen. It perches dramatically on a hill overlooking mainland Madagascar's coast off in the distance... the channel of deep blue sea in between is speckled with islands, producing a breathtaking vista.
Our huge room is semi-open air and boasts equally magnificent views. Below us, a deserted, creamy-colored beach beckons one to swim in the shallow, limpid Indian Ocean. Swimming by night is particularly wonderful, as microscopic phosphorescent algae leave a gleaming trail after every stroke.
Guy is a superb cook, and we happily (and in record time) scarfed down his poached mahi-mahi in vanilla sauce; a macedoine of tropical fruits with ginger; and perfect creme brulee.
On the other side of the island is a village, where the islanders sell handicrafts. But the real draw is a troop of gorgeous brown lemurs. These reside in the jungle bordering the village. They magically appear when one calls, as long as one is carrying a bunch of bananas. The lemurs leap onto one's shoulders and sit there, placidly and meditatively munching their fruit. It's an amazing experience.
