Grand Comoro Island, Comoro Islands, Indian Ocean

A brief visit to the remote Comoro Islands has shown us a country few westerners get to see. Extremely poor, the Comoros are nevertheless beautiful, with turquoise waters, sparkling beaches, a lushly verdant interior and friendly people.

The economy is agrarian. Exotic products like vanilla, cloves, cinnamon, pepper and nutmeg all thrive in the tropical climate. One can purchase all of these products at the bustling central market in Moroni, the capital.

I memorized a few phrases of Comorian. ("Hello," "How are you?" "What's new?") and was greeted with broad grins and hoots of delight when I tried them out... an instant ice breaker.
