This morning John and I set off with our driver on a whirlwind visit to five of the seven emirates: Fujairah, Ras-al-Khaimah, Ajman, Sharjah and Umn al-Quwan. Along with Abu Dhabi (which we'll visit tomorrow) and Dubai, these comprise the United Arab Emirates. The five on today's itinerary were nowhere near as developed as Dubai, although Sharjah and Ajman are closet to Dubai, and growing rapidly as the value of Dubai's real estate soars. Fujairah is the most lovely, with ochre mountains, palm-filled oasis and shimmering blue sea. Umn-al-Quwan, Ajman and Ras-al-Khaimah, the three smalles emirates, don't merit more than a quick visit. Sharjah is very built up, but doesn't come close to the appeal of Dubai, although it bills itself as the "cultural" emirate. The landscape on the road from Dubai to Fujairah was lovely, through jagged mountain passes, rolling dunes and lush palm groves
