Oman

We love Oman!  It is welcoming, enchanting, surprising, and gorgeous.

The capital, Muscat, is much less developed than the other Persian Gulf capitals, and with the exception of Dubai, vastly more interesting.  Muscat's soukh, a maze of stalls selling everything from apricots to zithers, is a delight, while the city's old quarter seems as exotic a place as one could imagine.

John and I drove 1000 kilometers from Muscat to Salalah in the south.  The route passes through deep desert, with nothing but sand visible as far as one can see.  Occasionally, one passes camels foraging along the road, who look up curiously if one slows to observe them.  Towards the end of the drive one traverses the dramatic Jebel Akhdar Mountains before descending to the coast.

Salalah is very green, not the sort that one expects to find in Oman.  It is also the world's leading cultivator of frankencense, which is famous in the Bible as one of the gifts brought by the Magi.
