Our Venice tour just got under way yesterday. We have a terrific group, all great food and wine lovers, so our stay here is undoubtedly going to be a gustatory extravaganza.
One of the most recognizable cities in the world, Venice and its famous canals enchant and delight. Romantic and seductive, a visit here is a step back to a time when the doges ran their rich and powerful trading empire. Venice is: narrow streets bustling with activity which open suddenly onto enchanting piazzas; tantalizing aromas wafting from myriad restaurants and pastry shops (pasticcherie); coaxing cries of gondoliers seeking boat hires; and ethereal, haunting, moody beauty everywhere... One envisions Casanova charming his way through this waterside city on foot and by boat under the shadows of the great churches and palaces which still retain their original beauty and charm.
April and October are the best months to see Venice, as the weather is very comfortable and the hordes of tourists are yet to arrive. St. Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco) is the central focal point from which to begin one's exploration of Venice. It is has been the central point of power from which the great Venetian Empire was governed, and today it retains that sense of importance as the heart of the city. Yet, in the end, it is the quieter, and less touristed parts of the city which one remembers most.
Venice's loveliness is on display around every corner, over every bridge, and inside every building. The best way to see the city is to literally t become lost in it.... Just put away the maps, slip on a comfortable pair of shoes, and wander through history as you soak in the beauty and culture that permeates one of Earth's greatest cities.
