Le Cannet, France

The South of France is famous for its beautiful beaches, chic watering holes and beautiful international visitors. From Cannes to Nice to Monaco and over the border to the Italian Riviera, the list of tourist attractions is virtually endless. Wineries and beach resorts dot the coastline and vie with picturesque hill towns inland in a tug of war for one's attention.

Our tour is based out of Le Cannet, a lovely artist's colony close to its more famous neighbor, Cannes. We arrived the day after the Cannes Film Festival ended, so the city is still abuzz with the excitement of the preceding week. Our huge, turn-of-the-century villa is centrally located and offers easy access to the entire Cote d'Azur, as well as to the stunning interior of Provence as well.

One of the tour highlights was our visit to the medieval village of Eze, located between Nice and Monaco. The view of the Mediterranean, a thousand feet below Eze's fortress-like perch, is breathtaking. Winding stone streets, only a few feet wide in some places, transport the visitor to the Middle Ages. On a more modern note, elegant specialty shops, boutique hotels and Michelin- starred restaurants are all found in this posh aerie, while a fantastic, terraced botannical garden crowns the citadel.

We're already dreading Saturday, when we must leave this Eden hugging France's southern shores. However, we're headed on a scouting tour of the Balkans, a place we've long wanted to explore, and that's preventing us from being too down about leaving.
