Chitiwan National Park, Nepal

Yesterday was a day of incredible firsts on our tour of Nepal.  After spending several days exploring the frenetic capital, Kathmandu, flightseeing around Mt. Everest and skirting breathtaking gorges and mountains en route, we have arrived at our lodge in magnificent Chitiwan National Park.
This morning we took a walk through the rain forest, riding Asian elephants.  These gentle creatures tower above the dense foliage, offering riders a great view.
Following a delicious breakfast, we sat down with our guides and the elephant keepers to learn about the life and habits of the elephants, which are being lovingly cared for by the lodge with the help of tourist dollars.  The highlight of the day, however, was our direct and intimate interaction with the elephants during bath time at the rivers edge.  We were invited to climb on top of the elephants while they sprayed river water over us from their trunks, then laid down in the river and had us scrub them with our hands. It's hard to tell who enjoyed this experience more...us or the elephants!
 
Tomorrow we will continue our scenic drive through Nepal en route to Pokhara, known for its gorgeous lakes and valleys set against the towering Himalayas.
