On board the M/S Antares Emulating the annual river processions of the pharaohs thousands of years ago, we are sailing south (up) the Nile between Luxor and Aswan. The ship slowly glides past supremely fertile farmland. The swath of green extends perhaps a mile on either side of the Nile, and thereafter, there is only the vast, seemingly limitless desert.
Periodically, we alight from our ship to marvel at a temple or tomb which testifies to the mighty Egyptian civilization of yore. The temples are legendary and designed to impress: Karnak, Luxor, Abydos, Dendera, Hatshepsut... It is impossible not to imagine the awe that the ancient Egyptians felt approaching these imposing structures. One gazes up from the base of their massive, hyeroglyphic-covered columns and gigantic statues, and contemplates what it must have been like... The cruise has been a welcome respite from Cairo, with its busy sightseeing. Cairo offers marvels beyond compare (the Pyramids, the Sphinx, the Egyptian Museum, the Great Bazaar, etc.), but its fast pace ensures that one appreciates the peacefulness of the cruise which follows.
The ship itself is the most elegant sailing the Nile. It has only 35 rooms, all of which are suites and decorated in impeccably elegant style. The crew is all smiles and couldn't be more helpful, while the food has been a delicious culinary experience. In short: we're being spoiled to within an inch of our lives!
