Seoul, South Korea

Seoul, Korea might not perch atop everyone's list as a destination getaway, especially in winter, but it certainly is a wonderful location to begin or end an Asian trip.

We've just concluded four fabulous tours of Nepal, Bhutan, Vietnam and Cambodia/Thailand and are now heading home to Los Angeles tomorrow.  We've stopped in Seoul for a couple of days to check out one of the world's most developed and modern metropolises.  In recent years, the people of South Korea have focused on creating a bustling economy based on manufacturing and finances.

As we gaze from our hotel window, we realize we could be looking down at any major city. Our view particularly reminds us of mid-town Manhattan.  There's a tangible sense of obsession to succeed through business; the Korean people seem single-mindedly determined to create a prosperous life for themselves and for their country.  the city's wide boulevards are lined with office buildings and modern shops bustling with shoppers, evidence of a strong emerging middle class.

Our chief pleasure on this short stop has been sampling, in a few of the local restaurants, the wide variety of local foods. After removing one's shoes prior to entering a restaurant's enclosed dining area, the waiter seats one at a low table and the fun begins. Kimchi, the national dish of fermented cabbage, is prepared in myriad ways, and can take some getting used to. Our favorite dish so far has been the uber-tender Wagyu beef. The beef prepared at the table; while it is cooking, its aroma causes our salivary glands to kick into high gear.

Of course, there's more to do in Korea than eat, but the brevity of our visit will prevent us from traveling beyond Seoul. In the meantime, we'll just have to order up another round of delicious cow.
