Philipsburg, Montana

For two city slickers from Los Angeles, the prospect of visiting a dude ranch was a stretch. Neither of us has much experience in the cowboy department, not to mention the fact that our wardrobe is sadly lacking in country western wear. Nevertheless, we gamely accepted an invitation from the 6000-acre Ranch at Rock Creek in Philipsburg, Montana, to visit prior to their official opening later this year.

Not knowing what to expect, we can genuinely say that we were shocked and awed at what we found. The ranch itself encompasses slow moving rivers, rolling hills and majestic vistas. The lodge and outer buildings have all been designed and decorated to elegantly emulate the local architecture.  No expense has been spared in furnishing the rooms and public areas, which include a four-lane, state-of-the-art bowling alley, a private movie theater, a dance hall, a western-themed saloon and an elegant spa.

For added ambiance, guests can take a ride in a 110-year-old Wells Fargo stage coach which has been painstakingly restored to its original condition.

Outside, friendly and knowledgeable guides share their expertise in fly fishing, clay shooting, horseback riding, archery, hiking and mountain bike riding. Stetson hats, cowboy boots, wrangler shirts and big ol' belt buckles are available for guest use, as well as for sale in the
ranch's mercantile.

For those who have ever been to a private game lodge in Africa, such as Singita or Londolozi, Rock Creek will seem somewhat familiar... it has the same privileged atmosphere.

Topping off the experience is spectacular, home-style comfort food with an elegant twist, to please even the most demanding palate.  We were treated to such fantastic dishes as tender elk tenderloin; strawberry and ricotta stuffed crepes; and raspberry and green apple cobbler with homemade vanilla ice cream.  The saloon (which will be open-bar for all guests) features top brand quaffs, including such local specialties as huckleberry-infused vodka.

So impressed were we by our experience that we plan to offer a Montana tour soon, and in the meantime are recommending it to all of our friends.  We've never promoted any location within the United States until now... and are eagerly anticipating our next trip to the Ranch at Rock Creek.
