One way to escape the oppressive heat of summer is to head south.... way south! And that's exactly what we've done on our short, mid-summer holiday to beautiful Brazil. After an easy, non-stop flight from Los Angeles to Sao Paulo, we recharged our batteries by strolling famous Oscar Freire Street in the tony Jardins neighborhood, and stopping in at one of our favorite restaurants, A Figuera, for an authentic Brazilian feast. Two days in Sao Paulo is never enough, but our sights were set on one of our fave cities, Rio de Janeiro. Blessed with an abundance of music, attitude, beautiful beaches (and beautiful people!) and nestled between rising green hills and sparkling blue waters, Rio is paradise both winter and summer. On this visit we've arranged a fantastic apartment in Leme. From our terrace, we gaze down at the entire, four-kilometer crescent-shaped littoral of adjacent Copacabana, populated by volleyball players, rollerbladers, bicycle riders, sunbathers and soccer players. Cariocas live at the beach! Of course, none of our travels would be complete without sampling the local cuisine, and so we headed to Porcao for tangy caipirinhas and the absolute best beef north of Argentina. One of our favorite new local flavors is acai, an Amazon fruit with incredible health properties. It's served as a deep-purple slushy which can be ordered in almost any cafe... and is addictively delicious.
Is there anything we don't like about Brazil? Yes, there is......LEAVING! We're already making plans for our next return, most likely in February to join the fun and festivities of Carnival.
