Douglas Easton Travel brings interesting people to the world's most interesting places. Our tours are meticulously planned, involve an enormous amount of advance work and preparation and are designed to offer tour members the most relaxed, informative and comfortable experience possible at a reasonable price.
Our destinations are chosen either for their universal appeal or for being off the beaten tourist track. We also try to vary the places visited: most tours are more than likely to include some time each in cities, the countryside, in the mountains and by the sea. Our tours are also limited in size, allowing us flexibility to visit many places which larger tours cannot. We also make a concerted effort to meet, or speak at length with, all prospective travelers, ensuring that our tours are comprised of the sort of interesting, adaptable, curious and considerate people with whom one would want to travel.
While many of our travelers are gay, our tours are open to everybody without regard to race, gender, creed, religion, age or sexual orientation. Many of our gay-friendly straight friends are repeat travelers with us.
Some foreign countries do not enjoy the same protections to which we in the United States are accustomed with regard to provisions for handicapped persons. This varies greatly by location.
Lodgings selected are luxury or first class wherever possible. Many of them routinely appear in lists of the world's best hotels. On the safari portion of our South Africa and Namibia Luxury Safari, for example, we stay at Singita Private Game Lodge, ranked #1 by Andrew Harper and by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler, and listed by AOL in 2005 among the world's ten most expensive hotels. On our Rio de Janeiro & São Paulo tour, we stay at the Emiliano, arguably South America's best hotel.
Restaurants are painstakingly chosen, weighing the variables of quality of cooking, atmosphere, friendliness of staff, location and price. We also do our best to patronize establishments which have made a commitment to local produce and cooking dishes indigenous to the area. Food is a great way to get to know a country.
The size of our tours ranges from four to twenty-four guests. The average size is usually in the range of ten to twelve.
A journey with Douglas Easton Travel is the diametric opposite of the stereotypical "tour group" tour. One of the most imoprtant characteristics of our vacations that differentiates us from other tour companies is that we always allow our guests ample time to explore on their own. Guests can pick and choose which sightseeing sounds appealing, and skip anything that doesn't. There's no mandatory anything. A vacation should be over-the-top fun, not boot camp. Some tour companies run their trips like military operations, where every minute must be accounted for. We're highly organized, but that's just not us... not by a long shot.
You'll find most of the information you'll need for your trip posted on that respective tour page. This includes facts on weather, visas, currency, immunizations (if necessary), cameras and local customs, etc. However, if there's something you'd like to know that you don't see answered, you are heartily encouraged to ask us.
